This album recorded in 1967 by the Electronic Music Studio (EMS) of the University of Toronto exemplifies early experimentations in electronic music. It was the first studio of its kind in Canada (founded by Dr Arnold Walter) and the second in the North American Continent. The abstract songs are eerily captivating. Liner notes include explanations of how the songs were created, as well as biographical information on the members of the EMS.

Both more and less than what a partnership of Sumner and Marr would promise, Electronic’s debut has weathered time much better than might have been thought upon its release, but ultimately only half works. When it does, though, it’s fantastic, sometimes shifting from okay to fantastic within the same song. Opening number “Idiot Country” is a bit like that — the beginning sounds a little too rushed, Marr’s heavy wah-wah riff OK enough but Sumner’s semi-rap/semi-sung vocals a bit ham-handed. By the time the full combination of gentle keyboards, crisp rhythms, and the gentle, reflective chorus comes to bear, though, everything feels just great. Perhaps understandably Electronic leans much more toward New Order than the Smiths — Marr had already proven his desire to work in dance-crossover since his previous band’s breakup, while Sumner’s immediately recognizable, melancholic vocals call to mind New Order’s rich history. With synth bass and Rolands standing in for Peter Hook’s own unique way around the low end, though, Electronic stands out more on its own. Marr’s guitar work throughout tends towards the subtle via soft, brisk strums or the occasional repeated key riff; as he’s credited for keyboards as well, it’s likely much of his work ended up creating the pleasant synth melodies. There’s nothing bad per se on Electronic, merely mediocre or a touch forced time to time — “Gangster,” for instance, has a great, cinematic tension undercut by Sumner’s attempt at social relevance. The three singles from the album remain the highlights: the delicate, acoustic guitar-led slow groove of “Get the Message,” “Feel Every Beat” and its appropriately slamming rhythms, and, in America, the group’s brilliant debut effort “Getting Away with It.” Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys, who memorably guested on that last number, brings bandmate Chris Lowe along to help on his excellent, sly duet with Sumner — “Patience of a Saint,” another standout. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi Performers: Helen Powell – Oboe; Bernard Sumner – Vocals, Keyboards; Chris Lowe – Keyboards; David Palmer – Drums; Denise Johnson – Vocals; Donald Johnson – Drums, Percussion; Johnny Marr – Guitar, Keyboards; Neil Tennant – Vocals

Pioneers of Electronic Music

Pioneers of Electronic Music

$13.58

New World Records’ Pioneers of Electronic Music is a repackaging of the CRI title of the same name and centers around the activity of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center founded by Vladimir Ussachevsky and Otto Luening. The designation “pioneers” in this case is a particularly apt one — these are not pioneers of techno or some other latter-day popular music involving the use of electronics, but pioneers of electronic music itself. At the Museum of Modern Art, the earliest four of these Ussachevsky and Luening pieces — Sonic Contours, Low Speed, Invention in Twelve Notes, and Fantasy in Space — were presented on October 26, 1952, in what is now adjudged as the second-ever concert of electronic music in American history. Add Incantation and you have the contents of a 10″ LP called Tape Recorder Music, released in 1955 on the Innovations label, the first commercially issued record of American electronic music and an extremely scarce item in its original form. Before finally landing on this New World CD, some or all of these selections have been released in a variety of forms, even at one point in “fake stereo.” It is good that they now have a permanent home — by right they should not ever be out of print. Listening to the early monophonic Ussachevsky and Luening tape recorder music and it is easy to underestimate what they achieved; in order for this primitive system to do its thing, one needed to have a trigger, which was generally either Ussachevsky’s piano or Luening’s flute. The flute, as it turns out, was an excellent choice, as its purity of tone was closest to the sound of a sine wave, later the basic seed of most electronic music in its next historical phase. Some may feel that Luening’s plainly Native American-derived melody in Fantasy in Space is a little cheesy; at the time, it was a good handle for those listeners who could barely consider this music. Nevertheless, the impact of these early pieces was both enormous and universal — the opening of Kraftwerk’s 1977 piece The Hall of Mirrors from the album Trans Europe Express directly references the opening of Incantation; it just so happens that Florian Schneider is also a flute player, and has designed his own equipment based on its capabilities. Although Luening’s Moonflight and Ussachevsky’s Piece for Tape Recorder originate elsewhere, the balance of the disc is taken from the two-LP CRI set Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center: Tenth Anniversary. This was a very popular electronic music album in the 1970s, and those who owned the original may have a nostalgic flashback in listening to pieces like Bülent Arel’s Stereo Electronic Music No. 2 or Pril Smiley’s Kolyosa. Mario Davidovsky’s Synchronisms No. 5 has actually managed to gain some currency as a standard repertoire item, along with several of his other Synchronisms, but none of the works was created with the intention of becoming part of the larger discipline of Western art music. These were teaching pieces an

Jørgen Plaetner: Electronic Music

Jørgen Plaetner: Electronic Music

$7.98

If Danish electro-acoustic music pioneer Jørgen Plaetner had any of his electronic music released on record or CD during his lifetime, outside of a single piece, Passerer on the Dacapo compilation Electro-acoustic Music from DIEM issued in 1989, it is not known to many people. One need not wait any longer: Jørgen Plaetner: Electronic Music, an excellent compilation of Plaetner’s electronic and electro-acoustic works dating from 1962-1974, has been issued in Dacapo’s “open space” series. Plaetner’s involvement in electronic music was certainly a well-kept secret outside of Denmark: with only minimal resources at hand, he built his own electronic music studio in 1960. The earliest works on the disc, Modulations and Nocturne were recorded in 1962 and 1963, and it is hard to believe that these pieces are more than four decades old. Even as composers working in research laboratories were then trying to develop tape loops analogous to the structure of twelve-tone rows and teaching computers to sing songs like “Bicycle Built for Two,” Plaetner was working in dense, multi-layered thickets of electronic sound not at all unlike the industrial techno music of the future. As in the case of neglected American electronic pioneer Raymond Scott, Plaetner was interested in the practical side of electronic music more than in trying just to make newer, weirder sounds. Once his basic vocabulary of gestures was established, he seldom deviated from them except to expand their sense of interaction with other acoustic sounds, such as the flute in Nocturne, or with text, as in The Lovers (1965). It seems as though Dacapo rescued these pieces just in time, as the master tapes of Modulations, Hieronymus Bosch, and Nocturne are all showing telltale signs of deterioration. Certain of Plaetner’s electronic pieces are now believed lost, an unfortunate situation found to be the case repeatedly with the work of many pioneers, as the worldwide legacy of electronic music before 1975 is finally revisited, evaluated, and accounted for. For those who wish to broaden their knowledge of early electronic music, Jørgen Plaetner: Electronic Music is manna from heaven and should not be missed. ~ Uncle Dave Lewis , Rovi
